I wrote this last night after rewatching "You're Welcome" and having all sorts of Cangel feelings (as well as “WHY DO YOU HATE HAPPINESS, JOSS WHEDON?!? Feelings).  In my post-NFA verse, I resurrect Cordelia and Anya, and when the Fang Gang has regrouped at the Hyperion with the Scoobies (who came to save the day after Buffy had a prophetic slayer dream about Angel’s suicidal plan), I imagine a conversation like this taking place:

Spike: For God’s sake, stop moping about Harris and just go find him.

Anya: I am not moping about Xander!  I don’t love him, and I’m not going to him, and you’re not one to talk anyway, you- you kettle!  You go find Buffy!

Spike: I’m not finding Buffy!  She said she doesn’t want anything to do with me.  If she changes her mind, she can find me!

Anya: She only said that because her feelings are hurt because you didn’t contact her because you’re a moron!

Spike: You- just- shut up, pot.

Anya: Gah!  (moans)  This isn’t fair.  I’m alive again.  I’m supposed to be happy.

Spike: (snorts)  Get used to it.  The only happy people here are-

Anya: Angel and Cordelia.

Brief silence.  They exchange looks.

Cut to Angel’s door and Spike hammering on it.  Angel opens it, very irritated.

Angel: What do you want?

Spike: Oh good, you’re dressed.

Angel: What?

Spike: You’re not allowed to have sex!

Anya: No sex for you!

Spike: None!

Cordelia: (coming up behind Angel)  Excuse me?  Who do you think you are?

Spike: The guy’ll who have to clean up your mess when he loses his soul.

Angel: (chagrined)  We’re just talking…

Cordelia: His- no, he wouldn’t lose- not if we- I mean…would- would you?

Angel: (shuffles feet awkwardly)  Um.  I- I might.  There’s a chance- um.  Probably.

Cordelia: (tiny voice)  Really?  You would lose your soul for me?

Angel: Kinda did once already…

Cordelia: Oh, Angel!  (kisses him)

Spike: No- bad-!

Anya: Bad Angel!

Spike: Hands off the cheerleader!  (yanks them apart)  Hands off the walking forehead, you, you brazen hussy!

Cordelia: Brazen-

Angel: Don’t call her-

Spike: That’s it, out of this room.  You’re not allowed to be alone together.  (yanks Cordelia out of the room)

Cordelia: Hey!

Angel: Spike-

Spike: No buts!  You, count your sins!

Angel: What?

Spike: In 1885 you slaughtered an Easter church service.  Killed every last parishioner and saved the vicar for last so he had to watch them all die.

Cordelia: Oh my God.  Spike, stop it…

Anya: It’s working!  He’s going all frowny-faced!

Spike: In 1893 you killed a mother and her children because the father had been rude to you in the pub…

Angel: Why are you doing this…

Spike: You think I’m gonna let you be happy, you pillock?  (nods to Anya and Cordelia)  Take her to a different room.

Anya: But I want to hear more…

Watching "You're Welcome" was very bittersweet for obvious reasons, and it was interesting because I've never rewatched the episode in its entirety since the first time I saw it; I usually just rewatch a few of the key Cangel scenes.  Seeing the relationship in context again, I'm utterly bewildered by the fact that some people claim Angel didn't love Cordelia.  It actually perplexes me.  The only way this episode could be more explicit about their feelings for each other would be if they actually said those three little words.  And those words aren't even necessary; they would just be icing on the cake (and possibly the too-sugary kind at that).  The way they look at each other and talk to each other and help each other is so beautiful that it makes me sad to think that people actually scoff at their love.  I can understand refusing to acknowledge the love between Buffy and Spike in S7 after what happened in S6, even if I think it's irrational, but I can't understand people who say Angel never loved Cordelia.  :(

I love you.

And you're dialogue fic....girl, you should see the shit-eating, goofy ass grin on my face right now.

I love your head canon. <3

:) I'm really happy you liked it. <3

They're all just so great together. Angel and Cordy, Angel and Spike... Even Spike and Cordy are wonderful. In two minutes of screen time, they're comic gold!

"I thought he had a soul."
"I thought she didn't."
"I do."
"So do I."
"Well, clearly, mine's better."

Ack, these characters!!

It's clear we should have wrestled these characters from Joss a long time ago, and write fun couples fic where they have adventures and snipe and snark at each other, and where Anya, Spike, Cordelia, Angel and Buffy are all allowed to have happiness and ride unicorns. Anya can have Xander and Spike and Cordelia can have Comedy Hour and become buddies who commiserate over their respective relationships. *dreams*

Lord, I'm about to vomit rainbows.

:D That all sounds delightful (although I'm not sure how much Buffy and/or Spike would appreciate the unicorns after Harmony). So, I actually call my verse the HEA-verse, because everyone eventually lives happily ever after (with some angst along the way, of course), and I'm sure that makes some people side-eye it, but I don't care, because I WANT THESE CHARACTERS TO BE HAPPY.* THEY DESERVE IT.**

*Provided Angel's soul is locked down, of course. :P

**Weeelll, maybe not mass-murdering Spike and Angel, but I want them to be happy anyway!!

It's clear we should have wrestled these characters from Joss a long time ago

Sometimes I wonder what various characters would do to Joss if they found out he had "control" over their lives and had made certain things happen... Would Angel "let Angelus" take the reins for a bit? Would Buffy kick his ass? Would Willow go veiny and scary again?

I like the HEA verse, and I'd never side eye it. I side eye a creator who thinks misery is the only good way to tell a story, so...

And Angel's soul being locked down would be a must. On any other show, it would have happened as soon as it became a liability to show, or at least it would be retconned as Jenny modifying the spell she found to exclude the happiness clause, seeing how it was causing so much trouble just then. Why would she even keep it in? So yeah, happiness and rainbows (no unicorns!) for everyone, exluding Spike and Angel reverting to mass murderer days.

Would Angel "let Angelus" take the reins for a bit? Would Buffy kick his ass? Would Willow go veiny and scary again?

yes, yes and, thinking about Tara, yes.

Why would she even keep it in?

Seriously! And if Buffy and Angel loved each other so much, why didn't either of them try to find a solution in S3? If Cordy and Angel wanted to be together, I don't think she'd put up with that nonsense for a moment. She'd start looking for a way to fix the loophole immediately- trying spells, locating the Gypsies and requesting their help, etc. Angsty, celibate love, pshaw.

Plus, that magical "condom" she and Groo used so she could keep her visions would totally work on Angel's soul, right? :D

yes, yes and, thinking about Tara, yes.

I can easily picture Angel and Willow giving into murderous rages and hurting Joss (yeah, I've always thought Willow would be even worse than Angel because of Tara), but I'm not sure I could see Buffy attacking him. Ooh, although I could if someone brought up Joyce's death.

In my experience the people who deny Angel loved Cordelia romantically are always people who have a vested interest in him loving someone else romantically. I don't think I've ever run across anyone who denied that he loved her as a friend.

(Of course, that goes for pretty much any character who's shipped with more than one other person.)

Yeah, I would assume it's mostly Bangel fans who denounce Cangel, but it's just...ugh, it's just disheartening. Cangel's not even an offensive ship! I mean, I can understand how Spuffy would offend people, even if I don't agree with them. But Cangel is so sweet and affectionate and loving. Sigh.

Usually they'll say Angel loved her like a sister.

This is only tangentially related, but a friend of mine has only recently started watching Buffy and she's completely unspoiled. It's amazing. The other day she asked me if Jenny Calendar turned out to be an important character and I just laughed.... I asked where she was in the series - she just finished season one. I told her that season two was where she would learn what it meant to be "Joss'd" and that she'd know it when it happened. Then I laughed more.

In retrospect that was maybe kind of mean...

Hah! Oh, your poor friend (and poor Jenny- WHY, JOSS, WHY). Wow, that is rare for someone to be completely unspoiled. I can't even manage that for shows that haven't been around for fifteen years. I don't recall knowing that you were a BtVS fan. That's cool. :)

She's like a unicorn - no His Dark Materials, Giver, Harry Potter (except first few movies), Hunger Games, Star Wars...

I'm totally a Buffy fan! Not a huge one, though. I love the characters and respect the hell out of the show, but once it was over, it was over for me, too. I've rewatched the shit out of The X-Files, Farscape, and Bryan Fuller shows, (and recently Roswell, which was as angst-tastic and amazing as I remembered) but since I see that Buffy is streaming on Netflix, maybe it's time...

Holy banana, how can she be a virgin for all of them? She's like Mark of Mark Watches.

Well, that's neat to know. You can never have too many offline BtVS friends. Unless you shipped different things, which could get awkward. :P

I believe that Angel and Cordelia did have deep feelings for each other and I would have been fine with it had the writers let the relationship progress naturally.

But in my opinion, they did not. They had other characters continually pointing out their attraction to one another (kyrumption, anyone?) and I found this very bothersome. It began to irk me and in time (during season 4), I began to dislike it. Mightily.

I prefer Angel/Cordelia fanfic the exact same way I prefer Buffy/Spike fanfic. Because I loathed what the writers did with the romances.

Also, heeeeeeee! Awesome dialogue!

I, too, hate how the writers tried to shove Cangel down the audience's throats in S3 rather than let it develop naturally (and eurgh, Cangel doesn't even exist in S4, that's not Cordelia, what was that abomination of a season), but for me, that doesn't spoil the fact that they were legitimately in love (and while S3 doesn't always feel natural, I think "You're Welcome" does). The Writers That Be just never gave them the chance to be themselves. :(

Thanks! Glad you liked it. :)

I adore this. I saw it on Tumblr and I meant to comment on it, but I got distracted. So I'll do it here! I love Spike and Anya being all pissy because they aren't with Buffy and Xander, and them trying to keep Angel and Cordy apart for the sake of the world. "You, count your sins!" :D :D And, of course, Angel telling Cordelia that being with her would make him lose his soul :D

PREACH. I don't even ship them after S3, but the idea that their love wasn't real is ludicrous.

I don't understand that either, but I haven't seen much of it. More because I don't have that many people on my flist who are heavily into Angel's show maybe? I'd assume those who deny it are either hard-core Bangels or more interested in Spangel, Angel/Wes, or something like that? Otherwise, I don't know how you cannot watch them through the seasons and not see it.

THIS WAS SO FUN. Spike and Anya and Cordy should ALWAYS be in the same room. Except when Spike and Buffy are having excellent sex, of course.

I couldn't agree more. I really couldn't.

YES, BUT YOU KNOW THAT ANYA WOULDN'T MIND WATCHING THEM. I mean, I don't particularly care for that kind of threesome, but I'm sure she would be down for trying it once.

Spike and Anya and Cordy should ALWAYS be in the same room.

I imagine them forming a club: People Who Died in May 2003.

Spike: No buts! You, count your sins!

Angel: What?

Cordelia: Oh my God. Spike, stop it…

Personally, I have no doubt Angel loved Cordelia, romantically speaking. I didn't like where her storyline eventually went, but "You're Welcome" was a poignant and beautiful coda to their relationship.
